After sponsoring Google Lunar X PRIZE, the company offers US$ 10 million in prizes for people who build the best software to enhance the company’s upcoming cell phone operating system. There has been a rumor about Google planning to launch GPhone. Recently, Google is developing a free cell phone software package that it says will make people easier to surf the Web over mobile devices. Let me tell you something, this is not a charity program, the Google plans to sell ads and services through this program. Moreover, the operating system will be based on computer code under open source licensee. Google hopes by taking this action, the company can encourage developers to create new software and improvements that could spawn new uses for smart phones.
To take apart of the Android Developer Challenge developers could offer simple aesthetic improvements like personalized home screens or complex social-networking programs that able to merge the user’s phone with the Web (such as maps or personal Web pages). Moreover, a panel of judges will pick 50 winners from entries received from Jan. 2 through March 3, 2008. Those winners will each get US$ 25,000 and be eligible for ten awards of US$ 100,000 and another ten US$ 275,000 awards. However, Google did not mention how the applications will be judged; the company only says that the developers that take apart of this program should provide consumers with the most compelling experiences.
Google’s Android will compete with mobile operating systems made by Microsoft, Palm, Research In Motion, Nokia’s Symbian, and several other major phone makers.
