For most people, when looking at a smartphone, one major thing to look is the capabilities and features of the CPU. Qualcoom’s 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, which is a name of an architecture of a family of chipsets with an ARM based CPU, is well-known as one of the best current CPUs featured in nowadays smartphones and mobile computing devices.
Qualcomm has introduced what’s in store for the Snapdragon platform, which powers Google’s Nexus One smartphone, among other things. Recently, Qualcomm has been announced that its plan to release at least two new Snapdragon CPUs in 2010, these will boast speeds of up to 1.5GHz. Like the current generation Snapdragon CPU, the new version will be available for use in phones, smartbooks, and tablets.
By the end of January, the 45nm 1.3GHz Snapdragon 8X50A will be available to manufacturers, and should be appearing in products by the end of 2010. Moreover, by the end of 2010, the Snapdragon 8X72 will be available, with two Scorpion cores clocked at 1.5GHz. The SVP of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, Luis Pineda, says the 8X72 is suitable for smartphones and smartbooks, and will be capable of driving a 1080p resolution video output.
It feels like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor is everywhere at CES this year. Lenovo is showing the Skylight smartbook and IdeaPad U1 Hybrid with Snapdragon. HP has been showing off a prototype device based on Snapdragon platform. And that is just the tip of the iceberg, which is makes your 1GHz Snapdragon-powered HTC HD2 does not seem all that powerful any more.
